X-BUILD

Fabrication and physical experience production

Concept · AI
In one paragraph

X-BUILD is the XSEDES division for fabrication and physical experience production. It makes the structures, kinetics and finishes of an experience from the same drawings the engineers use. What is built matches what was designed, fits the venue and is made to stand up to the whole run and the people who use it.

What does X-BUILD do?

X-BUILD produces the physical parts of an experience: structures, set pieces, kinetic elements, surfaces, housings and mounts. Production follows the engineering drawings, so what is made carries the cable routes, ventilation, access and weight of the technology it holds. Finishes are judged at real size and in the real light of the venue, not on a screen.

How does it work with the other divisions?

X-BUILD receives its drawings from X-STUDIO and the engineering team, and builds the surfaces and structures that X-IMMERSIVE, X-PLAY and X-LIVE place their technology into. Electronics, displays and sensors are fitted during fabrication where possible, so integration starts from a finished housing, not an empty box. The same team installs the work and stays for commissioning.

What do you receive?

Finished physical elements, installed and ready for commissioning, after mock-ups and samples have been reviewed. With them you receive as-built drawings and a record of materials and finishes, plus care and maintenance instructions. These documents are written for whoever looks after the work afterwards, so repairs, replacements and changes can be made without guesswork.

Questions

Questions about X-BUILD.

All questions
Why does fabrication sit inside the same company as engineering?

Because the people who draw it and the people who make it use the same drawings. When both work from one set, tolerances, cable routes, access and weight are settled before material is cut. It removes the hand-over gap where structures and technology often stop fitting together.

Can X-BUILD make elements that move?

Yes. Kinetic elements are engineered and fabricated together, with the motion, the structure and the control system specified as one assembly. They are tested through repeated cycles in place before opening, because a moving element has to work for the whole run, not just the first demonstration.

How are physical elements checked before they reach the venue?

Where possible, elements are assembled and tested before they ship, so the first fit is not on site. Dimensions, mounts, finishes and integrated technology are checked against the drawings, and checked again once they are installed. Anything that does not fit is corrected where it is cheapest to do so.
