X-LIVE

Live experiences and entertainment

In one paragraph

X-LIVE is the XSEDES division for live experiences and entertainment. It provides the show technology for moments that happen once and have to work the first time: control, media, effects and cueing. Rehearsal is part of the work, and so is the person who responds if something fails during the show.

What does X-LIVE do?

X-LIVE supplies the technology behind live moments: show control, stage and venue media, effects and the cueing that ties them together. The team plans the systems for a performance that cannot be repeated, rehearses them in the venue and operates them during the show. The producer decides what happens on stage, and X-LIVE makes sure the technology does it on cue.

How does it work with the other divisions?

X-LIVE depends on early work from X-STUDIO and the engineers, so the show is designed to be operable. It uses the media environments built by X-IMMERSIVE and the networks and access systems from X-CONNECT. In the run-up to an event it leads integration and commissioning, then moves to operation, with a named responder for each system.

What do you receive?

A show-ready technical system: control, media and effects integrated and rehearsed in the venue. Before the event you receive the cue lists, the system drawings and the fault plan, which names who responds to what. After it, you receive a report on how the technology performed and what should change for the next run.

Questions

Questions about X-LIVE.

All questions
What makes live technology different from permanent installations?

A live moment cannot be repeated. There is no second take, so everything is rehearsed in the real venue, with backup paths planned for each critical system. X-LIVE agrees in advance who responds to each kind of fault, so the show continues while the cause is found.

Does X-LIVE run the event itself?

No. X-LIVE runs the technology inside the event, not the event. The organiser, producer or agency keeps control of the programme, the guests and the schedule. X-LIVE supplies the systems and the operators that make the show technology work, and works to the producer's cues.

How does X-LIVE prepare for a single-night event?

Through technical rehearsal in the venue at full size. Cues, media and effects are run end to end, including the failure cases. Anything that does not hold is fixed before the doors open. The result is technology tested in the same place and light the audience will see.
