X-PLAY

Interactive experiences and gamification

Concept · AI
In one paragraph

X-PLAY is the XSEDES division for interactive experiences and gamification. It designs and builds the mechanics, interfaces and sensing systems that give people a reason to take part. The test is plain: visitors understand it quickly, it responds as expected and it keeps working for the whole run.

What does X-PLAY do?

X-PLAY designs the rules, the feedback and the interface of an interactive experience, then builds the software and hardware that run them. That can be a single installation or a connected set of activities across a venue. Each is built to be understood quickly, to respond reliably and to recover cleanly when something goes wrong.

How does it work with the other divisions?

X-PLAY takes the creative direction from X-STUDIO and prototypes uncertain mechanics with X-LAB. It builds interaction into the environments made by X-IMMERSIVE and links to registration and apps through X-CONNECT. Scores, choices and behaviour captured during the run go to X-INTELLIGENCE, so the next version of the experience is shaped by evidence.

What do you receive?

A tested interactive system: the software, the hardware and the content, installed and running in place. Alongside it, a design record of the rules and mechanics, an operating guide for the on-site team and a plan for monitoring and support through the run. Where data is captured, the handover states what is collected and where it goes.

All questions
What is gamification in an experience?

Gamification applies the mechanics of play, such as goals, feedback, scoring and reward, to something that is not a game. In a physical experience it gives visitors a clear reason to take part and a clear sense of how they are doing. X-PLAY designs it to be understood with minimal instruction.

How do interactive experiences cope with crowds?

By design and by testing. X-PLAY plans for several people at once, for queues and for visitors who do not read instructions. Sensors, inputs and software are tested in the crowded, noisy, real conditions of the venue, so the experience still responds correctly when the room is full.

Can X-PLAY connect to data or other systems?

Yes. Interactive experiences can feed registration, scoring, content and analytics systems. X-PLAY works with X-CONNECT on the digital layer and with X-INTELLIGENCE on what is captured. Each connection is specified at the start, so the experience and its data follow the privacy rules agreed with the client.
