X-LAB

Creative technology and innovation lab

In one paragraph

X-LAB is the XSEDES division for creative technology and innovation. It builds prototypes and runs controlled experiments, so a new idea is proven before it reaches a room. Teams learn what works, what fails and what it would take to run reliably, while the cost of finding out is still small.

What does X-LAB do?

X-LAB is where uncertain ideas are tested. The team builds small, fast prototypes and runs controlled experiments on interaction, sensing, media and display. Each experiment has a question, a method and a result that is written down. Ideas that hold up move into design and engineering, and ideas that do not are set aside early, at low cost.

How does it work with the other divisions?

X-LAB works beside X-STUDIO, testing interaction ideas while the design is still open. It passes proven approaches to X-IMMERSIVE, X-PLAY and X-AI, and hands technical findings to the engineering team. X-LAB also helps X-AI establish whether a model behaves reliably before it goes in a room. Results are shared with every division, not kept in the lab.

What has X-LAB built?

X-LAB builds X-CAPTURE, the XSEDES product family for photo and video booths. Its first deployment was the AI Portrait Booth at TEDxKMCT 2026: one main booth and two tablet stations, rebuilt and integrated by the XSEDES team, producing 520 AI portraits in one day.

What do you receive?

A working prototype or test rig, plus a short written record of the experiment. The record states the question, the method, what was observed and what it means for the full build. Where the result is positive, it includes the parameters and settings the engineers need to repeat it. Where it is not, it says why, so the same question is not asked twice.

Questions

Questions about X-LAB.

All questions
Why prototype before building the full experience?

A prototype shows whether an idea works with real hardware, real software and real people before the full budget is committed. It exposes problems while they are cheap to fix. What reaches the room has already been tried, so the first public run is not the first test.

Does X-LAB only work on new technology?

No. X-LAB also tests established technology in a new setting, such as a sensor in a crowded hall or a display in bright daylight. The question is always whether it works for the whole run in the real place, not whether it is new.

What does a client receive from X-LAB?

A working prototype or test rig, a record of what was tried and what was found and a recommendation on whether and how to proceed. The findings are written so that the engineering team can carry the proven approach into the full build without repeating the experiment.
