The idea behind the look

Black is the room. Green is the signal. Light is what happens between them.

XSEDES works in dark rooms: control desks, auditoria, LED corridors, the minute before a show. The identity borrows that condition. Black is the absence a light source needs. Green is the colour of a status LED, a laser line, a phosphor: the signal that says the system is on. White carries information. Gray holds structure.
